RAPID NEED ASSESSMENT RELATING TO INTERVNETIONS ON GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN BAMENDA

CONTEXT

Since 2016, Cameroon has experienced a social and political crisis, affecting the North West and South West Regions of the country, commonly referred as the Anglophone Region. The crisis began with street protests initiated by English speaking lawyers. They were asking for consideration of the common Law system in legal matters. These protests were closely followed by Teachers, requesting the application of the English subsystem of education in the educational setting. These differences triggered general strikes and have led to an armed conflict, causing many deaths, large population displacements and economic slowdown. The International Crisis Group reported more than 170 destroyed village and 1'850 deaths when UNCHR made an estimation of more than 35 000 people refugees Nigeria. Meanwhile, in May 2019, the HCT identified 437'515 internally displaced persons (including more than 350 000 within the North West and South West regions). The internal and external displacements have increased the risk of physical and sexual abuses and exploitations especially for women and children who represents respectively 35% and 40% IDPs and refugees: From mid-November 2018 to February 2019, 1893 protection incidents were reported in the NWSW region. In Bamenda City, violence and abuse have increased considerably leading to a preoccupying situation related to Protection and Gender Based Violence.
