International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles (IMPRS-gBGC) in cooperation with the FSU Jena provides a PhD program on Biosphere and Ecosystems. The Germany PhD program consist of understanding the mechanisms shaping ecosystem root water uptake and relating them to the unique site conditions by using modeling concepts. Candidate should hold a Master degree in the field related to the environmental science. International students can apply for this program. The programme application deadline is February 06, 2014.

Eligibility: In order to qualify, candidates should have the following features:

  • Master degree in a discipline related to the environmental sciences with a strong quantitative skills OR in applied mathematics and physics with readiness to work on applied topics in ecohydrology
  • Basic knowledge in soil hydrology
  • Experience with process modeling or data analysis with script languages (Matlab, R, Python) or other programming languages
  • Readiness to work in the field together with other PhD students in the group
  • Very good expression in English (spoken and written)

Scholarship Description: The IMPRS-gBGC located in Jena, Germany, offers PhD program in the field of Biosphere & Ecosystems. The project will be based on process and/or inverse modeling and work at the interface of hydrology and ecology. The PhD students targeting on modeling will also participate in the groups (local) field work. Selected candidates are expected to join in April 2014. Preference will be given to handicapped people possessing comparable qualifications.

Duration of Award: Successful applicants will be offered a PhD funding  including funding for the optional foreign research stay.

What does it cover? Candidates will be provided financial assistance of ca. 1300 Euros/month to reduce their living expenses plus additional benefits, including financing for the foreign research stay and support for attending conferences and summer schools. No tuition fees will be there.
