Each year the government of Canada offers doctoral research scholarships in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering fields for international students. The maximum annual value of the scholarship is $20 000. The scholarship holder may also receive up to nine payments totaling $60 000 during the nine sessions or 36 months. Only students who have been pre selected by a Québec university may apply for these scholarships. Applicants must consult the deadlines of the universities for pre selection. The deadline for submitting complete files directly to the FRQNT is November 1st, 2015.

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Must meet all eligibility requirements for the competition closing date, which is the 1 st November 2015.
  • Must have been preselected by a Québec university no later than 23 September 2015 .
  • Must not have already received a scholarship for foreign students Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research (MEESR) or Quebec granting agencies.
  • Should not be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Must not have applied for permanent residence under the Canadian immigration laws.

Scholarship Open for International Students: International students except from Canada can apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship Description: Doctoral Research Fellowship Program for Foreign Students (DE) of the Québec Research Fund – Nature and Technology (FRQNT) aims to stimulate the interest of foreign students to undertake or pursue doctoral studies in Quebec and financially support the best foreign applicants wishing to carry out a doctorate in natural sciences, mathematical sciences and engineering. The scholarships are aimed at foreign students who had been pre-selected by a Québec university and who wish to carry out their doctoral studies in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering fields.

Duration of award(s): Scholarships are tenable for first nine sessions or 36 months.

What does it cover? The maximum annual value of the doctoral research scholarship for international students is $20 000. During the eligibility period (nine sessions or 36 months), the scholarship holder may receive up to nine payments totaling $60 000. Each payment of up to $6 667 covers a period of four months or one session.

Selection Criteria: Applications are evaluated according the following criteria:

  • Applicant's academic record
  • Applicant's research skills and relevant research experience
  • Quality and scientific interest of the project and socioeconomic scope of the project, if applicable
  • Social involvement, leadership and communication skills

Notification: The board of directors of the FRQNT will announce its decision electronically in late April, advising applicants directly via their e-files. Each applicant will be informed of his/her ranking and may print his/her announcement letter. It is strictly prohibited to contact committee members, who must abide by confidentiality rules. The decisions of the board of directors of the FRQNT are final and without appeal. There is no review process. The applicant must accept or refuse the scholarship in the ten (10) business days following the receipt of the offer by filling out the e-form in his/her scholarship holder's file. Should an applicant fail to accept the award before the deadline, the Fonds will consider that he/she has refused it.

How to Apply: Only students who have been preselected by a Québec university may apply to the competition. University representatives who preselect applicants must fill out the applicant nomination form, which is available on the extranet site of the FRQNT. Preselected applicants will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and a password and must then fill out an e-form to which will be attached the required documents. These forms must be filled out and submitted electronically by the competition deadline.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The deadline for presentation of proposals by the candidates to a university varies from university to university. The deadline for submission of the preselected applications by universities is September 23rd 2015. The deadline for submitting application to the FRQNT for preselected candidates is 1 st November 2015.
