Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is inviting applications for international fellowships for beginning investigators. The ACSBI fellowship emphasizes the transfer of knowledge from the host institute to others at the home institute. 6-8 fellowships are awarded per year for the duration of one year. Strong preference will be given to research investigators, clinician scientist, epidemiologists, public health professionals from low- lower-middle- and upper-middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank. The application deadline is 1 November 2013.

Study Subject(s): It offers the opportunity to the fellows to be mentored by experts in the chosen field, receive hands on experience in clinical, behavioral or basic research, intellectual stimulation, research guidance, narrative transfer and many other opportunities to evolve scientifically and academically.
Course Level: This is a one year research fellowship programme for beginning investigators.

Eligibility: Beginning investigators or clinicians:
-Who possesses a terminal, advanced degree in their field
-Who holds an academic university or hospital position with an explicit commitment to return to their home institutions
-In the early phases of their career as an independent investigator and no longer under research mentoring
-The research proposed must be conducted at not-for-profit institutions
-Cannot be in residence in the host laboratory at the time of application or during the review process

Scholarship Open for International Students: International applicants can apply for these fellowships. Strong preference will be given to research investigators, clinician scientist, epidemiologists, public health professionals from low, lower-middle- and upper-middle-income countries, as defined by the World Bank.

Scholarship Description: The ACSBI fellowship emphasizes the transfer of knowledge from the host institute to others at the home institute. It offers the fellow the opportunity to be mentored by experts in the chosen field, receive hands on experience in clinical, behavioral or basic research, intellectual stimulation, research guidance, narrative transfer and many other opportunities to evolve scientifically and academically. The goals include not only developing future leaders in cancer research in low/middle income countries, but also facilitating a global effort in cancer prevention and control. This will be done by developing the necessary intellectual infrastructure in home countries (since ACSBI fellows must return to their home institute), encouraging collaborative interactions to facilitate interdisciplinary basic and applied cancer research, and establishing a network of researchers and translational scientists for rapid dissemination of new knowledge and technology in developing and sharing of best practices.

Number of award(s): 6-8 fellowships are awarded per year.

Duration of award(s): Fellowships are offered for 12 months.

What does it cover? US $50,000 each for travel and stipend.

Selection Criteria: Annual competitive selection is conducted by an international panel of experts based on:
-the scientific evaluation of the research plan
-the experience and qualifications of the candidate
-the suitability of the host organization and host supervisor
-appropriate duration
-a telephone interview with the candidate
-the availability of appropriate facilities and resources to apply and disseminate the acquired skills upon return to the home organization

Evaluation after the 1 year report: Approximately one year after completion of the fellowship and the return of the applicant to her/his home institute/hospital and Evaluation after 1 year report form will be emailed. Please use the Evaluation after 1 year report template for the report and return by email. Failure to comply with this condition may result in the request for the return of UICC funds. Your home and host supervisors will be notified should this occur.

Notification: Applicants will be notified by April the following year.
