The Humboldt Foundation grants up to 80 Georg Forster Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers from developing and emerging countries (except China and India). Fellowship is awarded to conduct a self-selected, long-term research project (6-24 months) in cooperation with a self-selected academic host at a research institution in Germany. Applicants must have completed PhD or comparable academic degree (PhD, C.Sc. or equivalent), for no more than four years the date of application. Applications may be submitted any time from 1.7.2013 until mid-2015.

Study Subject (s): The proposed research project must address issues that are important for the further development of the country of origin of applicants is highly relevant and appear especially in this context for the transfer of knowledge and methods in the developing and emerging countries suitable.
Course Level: The Georg Forster Research Fellowship (HERMES) is awarded for postdoctoral researchers to conduct a self-selected, long-term research project (6-24 months) in cooperation with a self-selected academic host at a research institution in Germany.
Scholarship Provider: Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is Co financed by the European Union (EU) in the 7th Framework Programme.

Eligibility:

  • PhD or comparable academic degree (Ph.D., C.Sc. or equivalent), completed in no more than four years the date of application. If the promotion is imminent completion, is already an application with the submission of the manuscript dissertation or publications containing the results of the thesis possible;
  • Scientific publications in refereed journals and publishers;
  • Choice of a research project with high relevance for the further development of the country of origin and ways of knowing and methods of transfer;
  • Research space and support commitment and a detailed expert report by an academic host at a research institution in Germany, details of the research project and the time schedule must be agreed prior to the application with the prospective host;
  • Reference report of the supervisor of the thesis and two other scientists who can provide information on the qualifications of the applicant founded, where possible, from outside their own institution;
  • Languages Spoken: humanities, social sciences and physicians must have a good knowledge of German if it is necessary for the successful implementation of the project. Otherwise, good English language skills are necessary; natural and engineering scientists must have a good knowledge of English or German;
  • Applications to continue an already started research stay can only be considered in exceptional cases. Before the application can no longer stay in Germany are. Person who resides at the time of application for more than six months in Germany, is not eligible to apply;
  • Citizenship and life and work center in a developing or emerging country (except China and India);

Duration of award(s): Fellowships are available for periods of 6-24 months.

What does it cover? The Scholarship amount per month is 2.650 €. This includes a mobility allowance and a contribution towards health and liability insurance.

Selection Criteria: The selection of candidates is based solely on the assessment of their academic qualifications. Quotas for individual disciplines or countries do not exist. The assessment of the academic qualifications of the Applicants using the following criteria:

  • Scientific career and previous academic achievement (mobility, Determination, technical breadth, scientific productivity)
  • Quality of the publications listed in the Application key (originality, Degree of innovation, in multi-author publications also own share of the candidate)
  • Quality of the research plan (originality, scientific methods, focusing, Feasibility at the host institution, opportunities for scientific, Development, success, the project in the requested funding period perform) and its relevance for the further development of the country of origin
  • Future potential of the applicants (scientific potential, scientific Development, career prospects)

Notification: The foundation will inform you and your academic host in the days after the meeting by e-mail about the decision of the selection committee. For larger meetings, the notice to all applicants and host can take a few days longer. If in case of a refusal, the reasons for rejection of the message be desired, so you get these unsolicited communication about four to six weeks after the meeting, also by e-mail. Scholarship Application Deadline: Applications are accepted from 01.07.2013 to expected mid 2015. Please send your complete application at least four to seven months before the selection date to the Humboldt Foundation. The selection committee meets three times a year in February, June and October of each year.
