The 3rd Africa-Europe Youth Leaders' Summit took place on 31 March and 1st April 2014 in Brussels. The event gathered more than 100 young representatives of African and European youth organisations which addressed some of the key issues also discussed at the Summit of Heads of State and Government with the aim to enhance meaningful youth participation in the Africa-EU Partnership.
The Youth Summit was opened by the President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy and the AU Chairperson Dr. Dlamini-Zuma. Further keynote speeches were delivered by MEP Louis Michel and UNECA Executive Secretary, Dr. Carlos Lopes. Other high level participants included Ambassador Jean Baptiste Natama, AUC Chief of Staff, H.E. Anatole Collinet Makosso, Chairperson of the AU Ministerial Conference on Youth, Professor Joe Diescho, Executive Director the of Namibia Institute of Public Affairs and Lord Boateng, member of the UK parliament.
The first day of the Youth Summit was dedicated to working group sessions on youth leadership, entrepreneurship/employment and the role of the youth with regard to peace and security as well as an inter-generational debate with politicians and high-level officials on responses to youth problems within the Africa-EU Partnership.
The second day continued respective discussions and focused on the setup of an Africa-EU Youth Facility to upscale the cooperation among the youth organisations of both continents.
The key messages and conclusions from the Youth Leaders’ summit were presented at the EU-Africa Summit of Heads of State and Government.
